ClearCube I/Port Extends Reach of PC Blades
New I/Port Expands PC Blade Computing by Connecting over Ethernet and Lowering Acquisition Costs

Austin, TX (October 6, 2003) - ClearCube Technology, the pioneer and market leader in PC Blade computing, announced the I/Port, a new desktop device that connects to PC Blades over IP. The I/Port extends the ClearCube product line to support any existing Ethernet network and cabling infrastructure regardless of the distance between users’ desktops and their centralized PC Blades. In addition, the I/Port cuts the cost of PC Blade computing in half by enabling multiple user sessions from a single PC Blade.

“The desktop PC, as we know it, is extinct and will be replaced in corporations over the next 5 years by products like PC Blades to lower support and migration costs, increase security, and provide reliability in line with emerging needs,” said Rob Enderle, President of The Enderle Group. “The I/Port PC Blade solution blends the performance, and compatibility of a standard desktop computer with the security and reliability of a blade implemented in an existing infrastructure of standard networking equipment. We are watching the birth of a new, and substantially better, desktop PC standard.”

The I/Port, similar to the ClearCube C/Port, resides on the user’s desktop but differs in three key ways. First, the I/Port connects to its PC Blade over switches, hubs, media-converters and other standard networking equipment, while the C/Port uses a direct point-to-point Category 5 cable run. Second, since the I/Port sends keyboard, video, mouse and peripheral signals over IP, the desktop can be located any distance away from the PC Blade. Finally, while each C/Port connects to its own PC Blade, one or more I/Ports can share a single PC Blade. This reduces the cost per seat for entry-level applications.

“The I/Port is a significant breakthrough for ClearCube and enables us to offer a range of centralized computing solutions that no other company can match,” said Mike Frost, president and CEO of ClearCube Technology. “The ability to have multiple users run off a single PC Blade means we can deliver the security, manageability and availability benefits of a PC Blade infrastructure at traditional desktop PC prices.”

The core ClearCube solution remains unchanged: take the computer off the user’s desk, shrink it to a PC Blade (powered by the latest Intel processors), centralize the PC Blades in a secure location, and use software tools to remotely manage and switch between computers and users. ClearCube’s management software enables a “touchless IT” environment where IT staff can remotely manage, control, and virtualize the resources of their end-user computing assets – without any trips to the desktop.

Leading organizations such as The Chicago Board of Trade, Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Edward Hospital, US Air Force and hundreds of others have already deployed ClearCube PC Blade solutions. By deploying ClearCube, customers realize 99.9% uptime, stronger data and physical security, and at least a 30% reduction in support costs while providing end users with a full, rich PC experience at the desktop.
